| Bonsai Tree
2005 This resin bonsai can be trimmed and pruned into your ideal shape. It is made using the process of Rapid Manufacturing where physical objects can be manufactured using drawings and data from CAD software. The process of rapid manufacturing is unlike conventional production processes in that this technology allows for external and internal structures to be built simultaneously from the bottom up, rather than constructed of individual parts assembled together. This object was an attempt to simulate an organic thing as rapid manufacturing seems to replicate the way natural things grow. Not only does it visually replicate a real bonsai, but also functions as one. The foliage is constructed from a rectangular block of ‘support structures’. These structures are an integral part of the rapid manufacturing process as they support the parts as they are being built. However, they are usually discarded once the piece is built, so they are essentially a waste material, but here they become an integral part of the object. ![]() ![]() Materials SLA resin Dimensions 150mm x 150mm x 150mm |
